The Discovery of CBD
Who discovered CBD?
It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the therapeutic benefits of medical cannabis are not a recent discovery.
In 1940, a team of researchers at Illinois university discovered a part of the cannabinol (CBN) chemical structure. The team, led by Robert S. Cahn, is credited for the first discovery of cannabidiol (CBD). Cannabinol and cannabidiol are both phytocannabinoids but have different compositions and effects when taken. Phytocannabinoids, are naturally occurring compounds in the cannabis plant.
CBD in the 20th Century
After its discovery, CBD has undergone various developmental stages. A plethora of research has since been conducted to ascertain the specific values of the cannabinoid. Dr. Mechoulam discovered the force behind the uplifting marijuana effect. He associated the THC cannabinoid to cannabis intoxication while setting CBD free from the same.
The banning of marijuana in the 20th century made it hard for scientists to access or even possess the plant for further studies.
During President Ronald Reagan’s tenure, his “War on Drugs “impacted marijuana in a major way. The restrictive laws at that time led to individual states developing their cannabis use framework. First, several states legalized the use of CBD in the first decade of the 21 st century. This was crucial as it allowed us to test CBD and confirm Dr. Mechoelum’s discovery. Now, the number of states allowing access to CBD use has exploded due to the DEA and FDA removing most forms of CBD from the list of schedule 1 substances.
CBD Products Evolution
Here are the major evolutions in the research, production, and processing of cannabidiol based
To create a potent, effective, and most important consistent CBD product, research and development (R&D) tests are of great importance in the development cycle, this leads to a Certificate of Analysis (COA). This way users get a thoroughly developed and tested product that is certified to be authentic.
The Entourage Effect
Discovered in 1998 by the Cannabis Guru, Dr. Mechoulam, the entourage effect is the result of the synergistic effect of multiple cannabinoids to realize a much more powerful therapeutic value than when using each cannabinoid separately.
Products having the entourage effect are designed and developed to contain a combination of these cannabinoids to create a more effective dose of CBD. Pure CBD products, known as CBD isolates, have a capped dose-response process. The value of the CBD stops at a certain level of increasing the dose. The entourage effect allows us to research various formulas and develop products with targeted results.
The term bioavailability is more common in the pharmacy world. In medical cannabis and CBD this is the amount of unaltered CBD that will get into the body’s cannabinoid receptors.
Bioavailability can be enhanced in many ways i.e. Designing smaller molecules of a compound or using other compounds (entourage effect). Also, new ways of taking CBD are developed to increase bioavailability i.e. Lotions, Candy, Sublingual etc.
Adding Terpenes to CBD products
The industry is now at a turning point, we have access to bio identical versions of nearly every cannabinoid (terpene). We have been able to identify terpenes that help with bioavailability and target specific reactions. This boosts the holistic approach of CBD as a form of therapy as we are quickly approaching a time when we can formulate products with controlled effects like keeping you calm, energetic, social or even enhance your creativity.
CBD is now a big part of healthy living. The journey has indeed been long but the developments in recent years are nothing short of impressive. The best part of it all is how integrated brands like Suncliff have been in the research and development phase. The CBD industry is headed to a new frontier of more effective CBD edibles, skincare products, and other wellness products.
Happy CBD days ahead for the industry and brands like Suncliff!
